Emerging in early 1980s New York during the revival of figurative painting, alongside artists like Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, George Condo (born in 1957) distinguishes himself by appropriating European styles and techniques of the past to address contemporary issues. Ayant émergé dans le New York du début des années 1980 et du retour à la peinture figurative à l’instar de ses amis Keith Haring et Jean-Michel Basquiat, George Condo (né en 1957) se singularise par son appropriation de styles et de techniques européennes du passé pour aborder des enjeux contemporains. Doué d’un trait rapide et précis, l’artiste produit des œuvres d’une rare intensité au centre desquelles se trouve la figure humaine. « Art qui reflète une potentialité schizoïde » selon les mots du psychanalyste Félix Guattari, l’art de Condo scrute les paradoxes de la psyché humaine et le grotesque de la société. Il témoigne aussi de la capacité d’absorption par l’artiste de la culture visuelle qui l’entoure, mêlant sans hiérarchie culture populaire et références érudites.
