The Enamel pin from 1991 in an edition of 300 copies was produced by General Idea in the Placebo series as a seminal piece of 1980s/90s conceptual art. It was created by the Canadian art collective General Idea (AA Bronson, Felix Partz, and Jorge Zontal) as a poignant critique of the medical and societal response to the AIDS crisis.
The Placebo concept highlightsed the psychological power of hope, the tragedy of false cures, and the systemic apathy toward the LGBTQ+ community during the pandemic in the 1990’s.
This object is from the first edition, published in 1991, and is distinguished by a gold-colored backing. The second edition released in 1996 had a silver background.
