The St. Louis Art Museum, rich in German Expressionist art of an earlier era, presented a museum show in 1983 , ‘Expressions: New Art From Germany’. It dealt with five of the better-known current names: Georg Baselitz, Jorg Immendorff, Anselm Kiefer, Markus Lupertz and A. R. Penck. Organized by Jack Cowart, curator of 19th- and 20th-century art in St. Louis, and later curator of 20th-century art at the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
