Active since 1998 and winners the 2017 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the Catalan studio’s principles, Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem, and Ramón Vilalta, have together developed a radical type of architecture that is both stylistically and physically grounded in its local context, as well as committed to nature. Its influences, however, are global, and although the firm has won many awards prior to the Pritzker, they were relatively unknown compared to other finalists. Key themes include connections between indoor and outdoor spaces, the passing of time, structure and materiality, and the dematerialisation of spaces.

The book featuring the most significant works and projects, from their first exemplary work, the Bathing Pavilion (1998), to the Row House in Olot (2012), and critical essays by Carles Martí, Juan Antonio Cortés and Josep Maria Montaner, as well as an interview by William Curtis to Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramón Vilalta. It also complements the presentation of the last works and projects of RCR arquitectes, between 2012/2017 by including the Soulages Museum, the Hofheide Crematorium, the De Krook Library or the Enigma Restaurant among other works, and an interview by Inmaculada Maluenda and Enrique Encabo, as well as a critical essay on the work of RCR by Juhani Pallasmaa.
