The book ‘New Babylon. To us the freedom’ was published to accompany the major Constant retrospective at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag (28 May to 25 September 2016).

A world without borders. People who do not have to work, but are free to play and travel thanks to complete automation. Constant Nieuwenhuys (1920-2005) depicted his ideas about a new kind of human being (the homo ludens), society and architecture in one of the most visionary and extensive projects in post-war art history: New Babylon. He would work on it for almost twenty years, until 1974. To this day, his global city of the future is a source of inspiration for many visual artists, thinkers and architects, including Rem Koolhaas.

This book not only illustrates the versatility of the project itself, but also shows the various steps that led Constant from his Cobra period to this central project in his oeuvre. Beautiful models, drawings, maps, paintings, watercolours and collages alternate with photos, sketches and other finds from his archive. Experiments such as the Ludieke staircase and the Door Labyrinth are also discussed, creating a complete picture of an extremely dynamic artist. IN NEDERLANDS!
