L’ouvrage, au contenu inédit, rassemble des textes des plus grands spécialistes de la peinture italienne de cette époque. En replaçant Cimabue dans le contexte d’effervescence artistique, culturelle, scientifique, spirituelle et philosophique qui marque l’Italie du xiiie siècle, il révèle toute l’originalité de son art. Réunies pour la première fois et présentées à côté d’œuvres de Giunta Pisano, de Duccio et de Giotto, mais aussi d’icônes et d’objets précieux venus d’Orient qui inspirèrent l’artiste, ses peintures majestueuses, vives et colorées apparaissent sous un jour nouveau.

A mysterious artist who has fascinated poets, artists, collectors and art historians for seven centuries, Cimabue profoundly renewed painting in Italy at the end of the 13th century. Paving the way for the research of Renaissance artists, he was one of the first to represent the world, objects and bodies as they exist. With him, the conventions inherited from oriental art, so highly prized until then, gave way to an inventive painting, seeking to suggest a three-dimensional space, bodies in volume modeled by subtle gradations, articulated limbs, natural gestures and human emotions.
The recent acquisition by the Louvre of the Derision of Christ, its restoration as well as that of the great Maestà are an opportunity to bring back to light a fascinating painter of major importance. The work, with its unpublished content, brings together texts by the greatest specialists in Italian painting of this period.
