Née à Osaka au Japon en 1972, Chiharu Shiota vit et travaille à Berlin depuis la fin des années 1990. Si sa pratique s’étend à la sculpture, à la photographie, à la vidéo et au dessin, elle est plus particulièrement connue pour ses installations in situ, dans lesquelles des fils de laine s’entrecroisent en tous sens, investissant l’espace du sol au plafond, jusqu’à envelopper les objets du quotidien qui s’y trouvent.
A travers ces fils noués, qui rappellent les mythes les plus anciens tout en suscitant une inquiétante étrangeté, l’artiste partage avec le spectateur les tremblements de son âme – l’expérience, intimement vécue, de sa propre vulnérabilité – et explore des notions universelles telles que le souvenir, le traumatisme et la mort.

Born in Osaka, Japan in 1972, Chiharu Shiota has lived and worked in Berlin since the late 1990s. While her practice spans sculpture, photography, video and drawing, she is particularly known for her site-specific installations, in which woolen threads crisscross in all directions, occupying the space from floor to ceiling, to the point of enveloping the everyday objects found there. Through these knotted threads, which recall the oldest myths while arousing a disturbing strangeness, the artist shares with the viewer the tremors of her soul – the intimately lived experience of her own vulnerability – and explores universal notions such as memory, trauma and death.
