Architect and urban planner Axel Ghyssaert (b. 1933) has lived in the Bruges periphery for a long time and realised most of his projects in West Flanders. His most important architectural achievements include the penitentiary complex for 750 detainees in Bruges-Sint-Andries (1980) and the De Linde primary school with individual open-air classes on the Brieversweg in Sint-Kruis (1981). Ghyssaert donated his archive to the Architecture Archive – Sint-Lukasarchief vzw in 2010. Scientific collaborator Sophie Gentens wrote her master’s thesis on the oeuvre of this modernist architect in order to subsequently put together an exhibition in 2016-17 and this catalogue.
