The title of this book “Panem et circenses”, which could be translated as “bread and circuses”, is a Latin expression used in ancient Rome, to denounce the deliberate use made by the Roman emperors of distributions of bread and organization of games with the aim of flattering the people in order to attract the goodwill of popular opinion. Today, it is sometimes used to designate the “entertainment society”, characterized by a lack of interest among the population in collective life in favor of mass entertainment. The book is divided into several chapters: “architecture”, “furniture”, “activities”, “symbols” and, finally, “epilogue”. It presents a pictorial history of the spectacle, from ancient Rome to the great football stadiums, through press photographs, in postage stamp format and framed with black edging, which convey the splendor and excesses of this type of spectacle event.
