In-depth examination of Alberto Giacometti’s surrealist work, also beyond his direct affiliation with the Surrealist group.

The work of Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) represents a unique contribution to modernist sculpture. Known for his elongated, expressive figures from the period after 1945, he was also a notable member of the Surrealist group around André Breton between 1930 and 1935. To mark the anniversary “100 Years of Surrealism”, the exhibition and catalogue shed light on Giacometti’s surrealist oeuvre, exploring how the surrealist element continues in his post-war works. His friendship and artistic ties with Max Ernst are also examined for the first time. The richly-illustrated, trilingual catalogue presents Giacometti’s surrealist-influenced sculptures together with paintings, drawings and prints.
