John Van Oers

John is a sculptor, creating spatial works that betray his affinity with architecture. He explores the boundaries between scale models, models and sculpture. As a part-time teacher at the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts in Arendonk, he also wants to show his students books about contemporary sculpture and drawing. That day he bought the book from Jockum Nordström for himself, an artist with whom it is sometimes absurd, the seriousness and humor evoke a kinship in thinking. The human figure is never present in John’s works, but they also tell a story, often autobiographically about his immediate surroundings and experiences. But because they were gently abstracted, his stories become less clearly legible.

Other books he has purchased include the monograph on modernist architect Léon Stynen, the book on the deceased artist Philippe Van Snick, on the lesser-known Danish artist Eske Rex, on the special work of Hilma af Klint, and on architect, furniture and industrial designer Jean Prouvé.
