A portrait of a unique 16th-century family of artists.
*Van Hemessen & Father* brings a forgotten family of artistic pioneers back into the spotlight, rewriting the history of the Antwerp Renaissance from a surprising perspective: that of a painter’s studio where a father and his children collaborated, experimented, and left their mark on art history. The book serves as the catalogue for the exhibition of the same name at the Snijders&Rockox House in Antwerp, produced in collaboration with the National Gallery (London) and The Bowes Museum (Barnard Castle).
The focus is on the daughter, Catharina van Hemessen—the earliest female Renaissance painter from the Southern Netherlands whose signed works have survived. As a woman in a male-dominated world, she painted and signed her work with great self-assurance. During her own lifetime, she already garnered international admiration among art connoisseurs. Her father, Jan van Hemessen, is considered a key figure in the transition from the era of Quinten Massijs to that of Pieter Bruegel the Elder. IN DUTCH, AVAILABLE IN ENGLISH UPON REQUEST
