Catalog of the exhibition Yan Pei-Ming – In the name of the father at the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar from April 2 to September 6, 2021 (to be confirmed). Echoing the famous Isenheim Altarpiece, a masterpiece from its collections, the Unterlinden Museum in Colmar is dedicating a unique exhibition to Yan Pei-Ming, whose spirit and work coincide with the themes of filiation, the sacred and sacrifice treated by Grünewald five centuries earlier. Yan Pei-Ming – In the name of the father invites visitors to explore four decades of the artist’s career and brings together in an exceptional way more than sixty works of major importance from public institutions and private collections. The exhibition and the accompanying catalog analyze Yan Pei-Ming’s view of himself and his creation, while evoking his stylistic evolution and his place in the history of art. Dominated by portraits and self-portraits, his work questions the artist’s relationship with his origins, from Mao to the figure of the father, through those of Buddha and the mother, not to mention the international landscapes and those of Shanghai.
The unpublished work Pandémie was specially designed by Yan Pei-Ming for the exhibition as the contemporary counterpart of the Crucifixion from the Isenheim Altarpiece: “I wanted to create a universal painting, which would cross time, a painting by height of the situation (…). She will speak to all those who have lived through this pandemic and will bear witness to this period to future generations. I think that the spectator will not come out of this exhibition unscathed. It is the power of painting “.
