In 1963 a surprising little book of photographic images was published entitled Twentysix Gazoline Stations. Signed by the Californian painter Edward Ruscha, it is exemplary of a new genre: the artist’s book.
Anne Moeglin-Delcroix reports on the birth and development of the artist’s book in the United States and Europe in relation to the avant-gardes of the 1960s and 1970s. Because it is inseparable from the emergence of so-called “contemporary” art, the artist’s book is an excellent introduction to understanding its main issues as well as the diversity of its manifestations. Each chapter approaches the artist’s book in the light of a movement characteristic of contemporary art which it illuminates in return. Thus this Aesthetics of the artist’s book invites us to reflect on the book as an artistic form as much as as a search for another way of making art.
This work constitutes the broadest synthesis to date of international production. Since its first edition in 1997, it has established itself as the reference study on the subject. For this new edition, the text, revised and expanded, has been enriched with numerous reproductions. Some 700 books are listed there (750 illustrations), productions of more than 500 artists, including Ruscha, Marcel Broodthaers, Christian Boltanski, Daniel Spoerri… IN FRENCH!
