Book with photographs by Finnish photographer Elina Brotherus (°1972). Brotherus often appears in her own photographs as a subject and is also keen on remaining an objective observer of herself, and combining documentary image-making with lived personal experiences. The artist either uses a long cable release or an electronic self-timer to realise her self-portraits. Never staging her photographs, Brotherus takes them instead without making any intervention in the space. Using herself as a model, her painterly photographs explore the positioning of the figure in a landscape or an interior space, how light reveals form, and what happens when the direction of the gaze is subverted.
