Years ago, Annie Leibovitz and Susan Sontag made plans to compile a book about beauty: The Beauty Book. After Susan’s death, Leibovitz knew she would never make that book alone, but she didn’t forget the project. As time went on, thoughts of the book returned more often, and Leibovitz began a pilgrimage of his own. The journey begins in Amherst at the home of Emily Dickinson, Sontag’s favorite poet. Virginia Woolf’s home and environs followed, Charles Darwin, Sigmund Freud’s last home in London, Eleanor Roosevelt’s home and Elvis Presley, Abraham Lincoln and many others. The project gradually expanded from houses, rooms and landscapes to objects. Leibovitz wrote an impressive accompanying text. Pilgrimage is a wonderful story about people. Their life history, their meaning, their beauty is inevitably evoked by penetrating portraits of the very immediate environment in which they lived. IN DUTCH!
