The Antwerp town hall, built in the sixteenth century to a design by architect Cornelis Floris De Vriendt, is one of the most important icons of the Flemish Renaissance. The building was in dire need of renovation. The board wanted to keep the town hall as the seat of power. This required a radical transformation that not only expands the town hall, but also provides it with all modern comforts. The design team (HUB architects and Origin Architecture) drew a remarkable design. While the ‘Beautiful Floor’ is being restored in all its glory, the top floors will be radically renovated into ‘Enlightened Floors’, thanks to the contemporary addition of two skylights. The book presents an extensive series of photos of the renovated building by Stijn Bollaert. In addition, it sheds light on the rich history of this unique World Heritage Site and delves deeper into the design and the complex relationship between design and restoration. The third part of the book pays tribute to the many expertises that come together in this extensive restoration project.
