The Nederlands Fotomuseum manages the complete negatives and slide archive of Ed van der Elsken and has recently successfully completed the major restoration project of more than 42,000 color slides from Van der Elsken.

Photographer and filmmaker Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990) has gained world fame with his black and white photography. However, he also worked in color for much of his working life. He already started this at the beginning of the fifties during his stay in Paris. In the second half of the sixties, he even almost completely switched to color, for a number of audiovisuals and in his travel reports for the weekly Revu and the monthly Avenue. His most important color books are EYE LOVE YOU (1977), Hello! A new Ed van der Elsken (1978) and Adventures on the Land (1980).

This is the first comprehensive overview of Van der Elken’s color work. It follows his development as a “color photographer” and places his color photography in an (art) historical context. In addition to space for relatively unknown and previously unpublished photos, attention is also being paid to the restoration of the 42,000 slides that the Netherlands Photo Museum carried out between 2016 and 2018.
