British Columbia, Canada, has experienced an unending cycle of killings and murders over the past 50 years. Since 1969, dozens of women and girls, many of them indigenous, have gone missing. Some were later found dead, scattered along a 720-kilometre corridor of road known as the “Highway of Tears”. The majority of the disappearances and crimes remain unsolved. By replacing direct evidence with absence, photographer Kourtney Roy highlights the impossibility of any obvious way of speaking about these “lesser valued” lives. Roy’s account mixes facts, personal stories from local people with a connection to these women, and images of this isolated and remote area.
