Jules Wabbes (1919–1974) is currently recognized as one of the most important Belgian designers of his generation. His furniture is highly sought after by collectors in Brussels and New York. This book, written by his daughter, offers enthusiasts the opportunity to discover his work through photographs, floor plans, and sketches, as well as previously unpublished excerpts from correspondence and interviews. The book first explores the designer’s personality and the environment in which he operated; subsequently, the various phases of his career are examined: the establishment of a design studio, his collaboration with architect André Jacqmain, the Milan Triennials (1957 and 1960), the production of his designs, and his work on both private and commercial interiors. Jules Wabbes began his career as a photographer, after which he became an antique dealer and subsequently a furniture designer. He specialized in office design, with notable projects such as the Foncolin (1957), the Crédit Communal (1968), and the Générale de Banque (1971-1973). He established himself as a designer with his ‘slat furniture,’ pieces made of solid wooden slats glued together. From this cabinet-like unit emerged a series of chests of drawers, bookcases, and sideboards, all mounted on the same metal base. Jules Wabbes had a particular fondness for wood, with a preference for exotic species, but he also worked successfully with metal. His furniture and accessories are robust, with simple, timeless lines. This publication offers an overview of his work; from aircraft interiors to student housing, including the creation of exceptionally precise and beautiful metal lamps and accessories.
