The rich history of the illustrious Hotel Schiller is Dutch history between the two wars.
The illustrious Hotel Schiller, a vibrant meeting place on Amsterdam’s Rembrandtplein during the interwar period, was opened in 1913 by brothers and sister Frits, Hein and Elsa Schiller. The hotel has grown into the vibrant living room of famous artists and bohemians. Everyone with a little name frequented the hotel and sat at the regulars’ table. They included celebrities such as Fien de la Mar, Heintje Davids, Joris Ivens, J. Slauerhoff, George Breitner and Leo Gestel. Well-known comedian Jean-Louis Pisuisse (“Man dare to live”) and his wife Jenny ate their last supper here before being shot outside the hotel by a jealous lover.
Refugee artists from Germany and Jews found shelter in the run-up to the Second World War and the Wehrmacht populated the hotel during the occupation. After the liberation the Canadians appeared. For example, with all those guests, national and European history entered the hotel and the life of the Schillers.
Hotel Schiller is not only a special and true story, but also a dazzling journey back to days gone by. IN DUTCH!
