For the first time, the work of two pioneering modern artists is brought together: the Swedish Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) and the Dutch Piet Mondrian (1872–1944). Although the two never met, the book and accompanying expo show that their idiosyncratic styles grew out of a shared fascination with the spiritual world on the one hand and a desire to understand the forces behind life on earth on the other. At the beginning of the twentieth century Hilma af Klint and Piet Mondrian, as landscape painters, found their way to abstraction with their own visual language.
This book offers the opportunity to get to know the colorful and fascinating work of the increasingly well-known and beloved Hilma af Klint and at the same time provides new perspectives on the work of Piet Mondrian and the development of abstract art.
Publication accompanying the exhibition Hilma af Klint & Piet Mondrian: Forms of Life at Tate Modern, London, from April 20 to September 3, 2023. The exhibition will then travel to Kunstmuseum Den Haag, where it will be on view from October 7, 2023 to February 25, 2024. IN DUTCH!
