The exhibition ‘Futurism & Europe. The aesthetics of a new world’ at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo (April 29 – September 3, 2023) announces itself as an absolute top European exhibition. The first major exhibition on Futurism after ‘Italian Futurism, 1909-1944: Reconstruction the Universe’ in New York in 2014 – with 600,000 visitors, the most visited exhibition in the history of the Guggenheim Museum.
Born in 1909, Italian Futurism strives for a radical rejuvenation of culture, expressing the dynamism of modern society. A search for a new all-encompassing aesthetic ideal image in all its manifestations: painting, architecture, theatre, fashion, film, sculpture, interior, design, publicity, graphics, in short, a ‘total art’ in all aspects of daily life.
The exhibition and the book examine and show for the first time the major influence of Futurism on the most important avant-garde movements in Europe during the interwar period: Bauhaus in Germany, L’Esprit Nouveau in France, Russian Constructivism and De Stijl in the Netherlands.
With contributions from 17 international authors, specialists from scientific institutions and universities worldwide.
Giaccomo Balla, Umberto Boccioni, Fortunato Depero, Antonio Sant’Elia, Enrico Prampolini, Filippo Marinetti, Tullio Crali and Sonia Delaunay, Le Corbusier, Fernand Léger, Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Oskar Schlemmer, El Lissitsky, Alexander Rodchenko, Theo van Doesburg, Gerrit Rietveld, Vladimir Tatlin, Yakov Chernikhov, Georges Vantongerloo, Natalia Goncharova, Paul Citroen, Fritz Lang, Lyonel Feininger, Cassandre, Moholy-Nagy, Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Aleksandra Ekster, Kazimir Malevitsj, Georgii Yakulov, Duncan Grant, Hans Arp, Percy Wyndham Lewis
