Catalogue of the exhibition presented at the Palais Galliera, Musée de la mode de la Ville de Paris, from 15 September 2022 to 5 March 2023.
Far from the clichés that surround her personality, the exhibition Frida Kahlo, Beyond Appearances invites visitors to enter the artist’s intimacy, and to understand how she built her identity through the way she presented and represented herself.
For the first time in France and in close collaboration with the Museo Frida Kahlo, the exhibition brings together more than 200 objects from the Casa Azul, the house where Frida was born and grew up: clothes, correspondence, accessories, cosmetics, medicines, medical prostheses… These personal belongings were sealed when the artist died in 1954 by her husband, the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, and were rediscovered fifty years later, in 2004. This precious collection – including traditional Tehuana dresses, pre-Columbian necklaces that Frida collected, examples of hand-painted corsets and prostheses… – is presented, along with films and photographs of the artist, to form a visual narrative of her extraordinary life.
