Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) is a key figure of Belgian realism. Primarily celebrated as a painter-sculptor, he left his mark on his time by giving a voice to the working man and emphasizing the noble character of his work.
Between 1875 and 1878, Meunier devoted himself to poignant social scenes, capturing the life and struggle of the working class with intensity thanks to his painterly skills. In the 1880s, he broadened his horizons by becoming an illustrator. His drawings, translated into engravings and reproduced using photomechanical techniques, were used to illustrate major literary works, such as Le Mort by Camille Lemonnier and Le Fils du gréviste by Louis Delmer. From 1885, he returned to sculpture. He would be celebrated internationally as one of the great innovators of sculpture.
