Artist, innovative poet and nomadic writer Christian Dotremont (1922-1979) was one of the most influential figures of the second half of the twentieth century. He became involved in the avant-garde movements very early on, was one of the founders of revolutionary surrealism (1947) and one of the main inspirers of the CoBrA movement (1948-1951). Back home from a trip to Lapland in 1962 he created the ‘logograms’, compositions with Indian ink and pencil in which text and painting, gesture and thought flow together. Throughout his life, Dotremont turned his work into a real field of experimentation around the materiality of writing. The artist died in 1979 and would have turned 100 in 2022. This book, which is published on the occasion of the exhibition ‘Christian Dotremont. Painter – writer’, highlights the different aspects of his work. It is richly illustrated and contains numerous logograms, handwritten documents, four-handed creations and photographs from the Christian Dotremont Fund of the King Baudouin Foundation, in the custody of the Archives and Museum of Literature, loans from various collectors, such as Pierre Alechinsky, as well as pieces which are kept at the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium.
