Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525 / 30-1569) is one of the most famous painters in the Netherlands. He is best known for his paintings about everyday peasant life, but he also made exceptional graphic work that was already internationally acclaimed in the sixteenth century. The Royal Library of Belgium (KBR) has been researching that lesser known work by Bruegel for many years and is now for the first time bringing the entire print collection together in an exhibition on the occasion of the Bruegel year. The expo will take place from 15 October 2019 to 16 February 2020 in the Palace of Charles de Lorraine in Brussels, which will reopen its doors for this occasion after a long renovation. Around the mid-sixteenth century, Flanders became the international production and trade center for graphics. Together with his publisher, Hieronymus Cock, Bruegel played a key role in this flowering period. The exhibition focuses on the unique craftsmanship and entrepreneurial qualities of both gentlemen and shows the long process of making graphic work, from design drawing to finished print, based on different states and editions. The subjects of Bruegel’s drawings and prints are incredibly rich. Time and again he conjures up imaginary worlds populated by eccentric figures and surprises the viewer with many exceptional details.
The luxurious catalog that accompanies this unique exhibition reproduces the works at full size, giving readers the chance to get to know Bruegel’s famous prints from up close. Specialized art historians, affiliated with KU Leuven and the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, provide fascinating insight into the fascinating world of Bruegel’s graphic work in five essays. IN DUTCH!
