Painter, pastellist and virtuoso watercolorist, Berthe Morisot (1841-1845) is also one of the co-founders of Impressionism. Within the Impressionist group, she was immediately recognized as one of the most remarkable artists who aroused the admiration and respect of her peers, Claude Monet, Edgar Degas and Pierre Auguste Renoir.

Remaining in the shadow of her male colleagues until the recent past, Morisot is now considered an essential personality of the new painting of the second half of the 19th century and of Impressionism in particular.

Since 1880, his art has been associated in particular with the elegance and grace of the 18th century, with the painting of François Boucher and Jean-Honoré Fragonnard, and the pastels of Jean-Baptiste Perronneau and Maurice Quentin Delatour.

This work constitutes the first in-depth study dedicated to this theme. Providing a lot of new information, it helps to enrich our approach and our understanding of Berthe Morisot. Beyond the superficial comparisons, the fundamental but subtle link which unites the first impressionist woman to the painting of the century of Louis XV is detailed and abundantly illustrated. This link stands out as one of the main singularities of his art, the key to a work which allows us to perceive “a touch of the 18th century exalted by the present”. IN FRENCH!
