Xavier Donck is an architect and collector of contemporary art and of books. When he came into Copyright Antwerp with his wife one Saturday afternoon (he is regular customer in Ghent), he had already seen the David Claerbout exhibition in Tilburg in the Netherlands and he was going on to a preview at the MDD in Deurle. A real culture vulture, Xavier follows all the major exhibitions in museums and galleries in Europe and the USA. Among other things, he chose the book-DVD 'House Life' about the life of Guadalupe the 'daily' at Rem Koolhaas' villa in Bordeaux. Xavier sees the film as "one of the most intimate portraits of architecture made in this medium". He finds the portrait moving because it is about the soul of architecture. And "if as an architect that's not what you're about, you should call it a day". As well as books about architecture, he also keeps abreast of contemporary art because he believes it is important to be open to all the cultural aspects of our age. Books he has got a lot out of include one about Francis Bacon, about the Belgian artist Francis Alÿs, 'Unmonumental', the catalogue of what he believes is one of the best exhibitions of the last five years, and books about the houses of Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto. And many many more ...
