This oublication puts the forest first and offers a detailed immersion into forest history, forest stand dynamics, forest ecology, forest-building carbon dynamics, and possible future forest trajectories as the pretext for thinking about timber building technics.

The specificity of regional forests suggests much about the prospect of non-extractive building design: building that tends and mends its terrestrial basis rather than takes, makes, and breaks it. How might we design and build in a non-extractive manner?

To address that evolutionary question this book considers the recursive relationship between forests and timber building. It puts the forest first and offers a detailed immersion into forest history, forest stand dynamics, forest ecology, forest-building carbon dynamics, and possible future forest trajectories as the pretext for thinking about timber building technics. The specificity of regional forests suggests much about the prospect of non-extractive building design: building that tends and mends its terrestrial basis rather than takes, makes, and breaks it. Building activity can augment and improve forest conditions as an instance of regenerative design and as a path towards reconciliation, but only if conceived, valued, and practiced in ways distinct from normative design and construction practices.

The future should no longer be a colony of present design practices that treat building as an art and science of extraction. By putting the forest first its conception of timber building technics, this book develops a more regenerative approach to the terrestrial relations of forest-building.

In the light from Granefelt’s flash invisible details emerge: the structure of the paper, watermarks, and notes that bring together the thoughts and observations of botanists from many different eras. Colours also re-emerge, folds and enclosed seeds become visible. This photographic documentation is accompanied by the words of Sverker Sörlin, historian of ideas and professor of environmental history, who examines the practicalities of plant collecting and reveals the contribution of herbaria to a revolution in knowledge about our world.

Explore the world’s most stunning coastlines in this breathtaking collection of gardens by the sea

Creating gardens in harmony with their environment is a key aspect of garden design today. Nowhere is this more apparent than in gardens created on our coastlines, whether that be atop a rocky Mediterranean cliffside, tucked in a sheltered bay on Britain’s south coast, or on the edge of a sandy beach in Australia. Rooted in their location and offering unforgettable water views, coastal gardens embody an atmosphere of tranquillity, beauty, and an intenseconnection with nature.

The Coastal Garden invites readers to explore 48 extraordinary private gardens set along the world’s most iconic coastlines. These verdant spaces represent a broad variety of terrains, climates, and garden styles – from Bernard Trainor’s design for a surfing family, overlooking the waves in sunny California, to Ulf Nordfjell’s thoughtful, rambling garden on the southern coast of Sweden.

The gardens address one of four different contexts for coastal environments: gardens atop rocky cliffs, planting for resiliency, framing ocean views, and gardens on the beach. The four chapters open with an exploratory text on the theme by writer and editor Sorrel Everton. Each garden feature is then brought to life through striking, large-scale color photographs and a short informative text, also written by Everton. Descriptive image captions provide further context, including planting information and special design details.

Along with in-depth garden features, an introduction by acclaimed plantsman and designer Nigel Dunnett offers insights into both the natural obstacles and incredible benefits of coastal gardens. A garden directory at the back, organized geographically, allows for easy reference.

Visionary landscape architecture firm OJB reveals the guiding principles behind its award-winning work in this new, expanded edition of its debut monograph.

OJB Landscape Architecture challenges the conventional boundaries of its field, emphasizing placemaking as a mechanism for healing, community-building, and celebration. At its core, the award-winning firm believes that landscape is a social and collective tool for integration, reclamation, and healing. This principle guides all of the firm’s projects across sectors, from its designs deepening our relationship to nature, such as public parks, and sites promoting restorative healthcare, such as campuses for hospitals and wellness centers, to large-scale urban landscapes conceived to reconnect and revitalize communities, such as the acclaimed RiverFront in Omaha and the other multi-project narratives in which landscapes connect and build on each other over several years to create thoughtfully realized and impactful environments.

In this new, expanded edition of OJB’s debut monograph, the pioneering firm shares its remarkable and meaningful work- and the philosophy that drives it – through fifteen projects of varied typologies across the United States. Beautifully illustrated with more than 200 color photographs, Envisioning Landscapes also includes a new foreword by The Dallas Morning News architecture critic Mark Lamster.

An intimate look at gardens that embody the rural dream and bring it fully to life.

Step outside and follow the quiet charm of cottagecore gardens across landscapes big and small: from expansive countryside plots to village backyards and tucked-away city refuges. Courtyards, edible beds, meadows, and intimate planted corners follow rhythms shaped more by time and care than by strict design rules. Soft borders, self-seeded paths, and textured, timeworn details reveal gardens that evolve with the people who tend them.

Celebrating a shift toward slower, more intentional living, this book explores how the garden becomes refuge, resource, and an ever-growing extension of home.

For centuries, artists, writers, and thinkers have turned to the garden as both a method and a metaphor for contemplating the complexities of their times. Within its cycles of resistance and renewal, they unearth the roots of power, the wounds of colonialism, and the fragility of the earth. Reluctant Gardener contributes to these conversations by reflecting on nature as lived experience, constantly re-created and co-constructed through embodied and subtle interactions. The garden serves not as a reference to, but as an expression—both experiential and performative—of ecology. In the quiet turning of its seasons, this unfolding book, arising from the exhibition of the same name, reveals the intensities of time’s passage through visual, auditory, and olfactory images, offering moods that resonate with today’s ecopolitical challenges. Amidst the tides of resurgent nationalism, the figure of the ‘reluctant gardener’ persistently reconfigures our origin stories, questioning which worlds we cultivate and which natures we preserve while revitalising how we perceive their rhythms and syncopations, much like gardens do.

This English edition of the classic ’39 Garden Plans’ (1966) by renowned Danish garden and landscape architect C.Th. Sørensen (1893-1979) presents a series of exceptional examples of garden architecture. Simplicity, originality, love, and expertise are characteristics that apply to the gardens in this volume. Every garden plan is based on an idea, an inspiration that is depicted along with the plan. The example could be a farm garden or a park at a castle, a greenhouse complex or a Renaissance parterre. But the idea is the same all the time: the idea must be realisable within the grounds of an ordinary house. ’39 Garden Plans’ is thus a catalogue of the (spatial) possibilities of garden art.

In this new issue we show how designers cherish the river and create beautiful projects along the water. Projects in which the river is approached with care, love, knowledge, and creativity, whether far upstream or at the very end, at the mouth.

We have collected twelve such projects and placed them along an imaginary river that rises in the mountains of central Europe and then flows through Canada, the United States, Thailand, and Portugal before emptying into the Dutch delta.
The issue is an homage to the river, as exquisite as she is, wherever her course may lead, from source to estuary.

Anne Geene’s quest for specimens with various types of appearances and deformations gives the book a teratological dimension. In her work, the photograph itself is rarely the focus. Taken out of context, the pictures are often no more than a registration of an inconspicuous fact. This means that her art is about collection, about the image in relation to other images and the ability to creates new ones by merging and arranging them. Enjoy an expedition through all of the botanical micro- and macrocosms.

The first book from today’s leading garden magazine, renowned for its stylish features, outstanding photography, and top-notch garden writing full of insights and advice. The editors have selected over fifty of their favorite gardens in a mix of scales and in a variety of climates to appeal to garden enthusiasts everywhere.

Gardens Illustrated is today’s most popular gardening periodical, thanks to its lavishly photographed features on contemporary, forward-thinking gardens that focus on irresistible plants and clever designs. Through these gardens, each selected by the magazine’s editors for a truly exceptional trait, readers will visit the best new gardens from the United States, United Kingdom, and around the world. The scales range from small city spaces aiming to bring biodiversity deep into the built environment to country estates photographed with a new lens on ecology and sustainability, and were created by today’s top garden designers, including Andrea Cochran, Arabella Lennox-Boyd, Peter Korn, Dan Pearson, Andy Salter, Tom Stuart-Smith, Andy Sturgeon, Urquhart & Hunt, and Keith Wiley.

From loose, waving gardens that appear as unexpected mini meadows and support wildlife in small urban backyards to pleached hornbeams that act as a living fence to distinguish the borders of a lush patio from the landscape beyond and gardens that show the best new ideas for hardscape, pathways, fountains, and pergolas, readers will take away hundreds of ideas for incorporating successful plant combinations and other design elements into their own home gardens. Text by the best garden writers relays plenty of plant identification information, tips for successful growth, and most important, provides insight into how these top designers conceived of and implemented the ideas that make each and every featured garden a place full of memorable atmosphere, charm, and relaxation.

A major survey and the first book of its kind, The Modern Japanese Garden is set to become the definitive book on the subject. Featuring gardens from Tokyo, Kyoto and Fujisawa to Osaka, Okayama, Fukuoka and beyond, this impressive overview includes major analysis of key works of interest through detailed garden profiles; insights into some of the most renowned Japanese garden designers across history; and a thoughtful exploration of the essential themes and developments in Japanese garden design.

The Modern Japanese Garden investigates the relationship between nature and modernity. Roughly divided between pre- and post-1945 Japanese garden design, it examines post-war shifts in attitudes towards the contemporary garden as they move from status symbols and expressions of influence to spaces of healing and mediation. A short history of the Japanese garden, from pre-Shinto stone arrangements to the last years of the nineteenth century, sits alongside analysis of the contemporary gardens of Japan’s corporate buildings, museums, hotels and public spaces.

Garden profiles offer a comprehensive overview of the most iconic and influential gardens in Japan, and include a mix of landscape- and smaller-scale gardens, many just recently completed. Interspersed throughout are short interludes, covering everything from the ancient garden of Ryoan-ji in Kyoto to the aesthetic lexicon of Japanese garden design, while essays from a number of high-profile contributors meditate on particular themes.

Intended for both professional and general readers with an interest in landscape design and Japan’s contemporary lifestyle, this is the definitive sourcebook on the subject.

Paris, the city of revolutions, of the Impressionists, the World’s Fairs and the Olympics, of Haussmann’s boulevards, of the Bois de Boulogne, the metro, and the Seine. Paris, also the densely built-up city with so little greenery per inhabitant. Heat stress is a problem there like nowhere else.

But under the leadership of Mayor Anne Hidalgo, a veritable green revolution is currently under way in the French capital. In many streets, the car is disappearing, and the pedestrian is being given space – now surrounded by plants and trees. On squares and traffic circles, urban forests are rapidly being planted, old train routes are being transformed into long strips of parkland, the equally famous and infamous Periferique is being covered over in strategic places. Not to mention Paris’ tourist hotspots, such as the environments of the Notre Dame, the Eiffel Tower, the Champs Élysées and the banks of the Seine. All these places are being redeveloped and given a green makeover.

In this book, we dive into more than 50 projects and take stock. We speak with ecologists, landscape designers and many other experts. Can Paris transform itself into the climate-resilient city of the future, even setting an example for other cities? You’ll soon read about it in the latest edition of ‘scape, the international magazine for landscape architecture and urban planning.

Af Klint’s exquisitely rendered botanical portfolio reveals a deep spiritual engagement with the flora of her native Sweden.

Across the spring and summer seasons of 1919 and 1920, Swedish artist Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) engaged in a period of intense observation of nature, venturing into forests and fields and drawing the flowers she found there. The resulting 46 sheets comprise her Nature Studies portfolio, recently acquired by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In pencil and jewel-toned watercolor, af Klint juxtaposed exquisitely rendered blossoms with enigmatic diagrams: a blooming sunflower is echoed by nested circles; lily of the valley is joined by a colorful checkerboard; catsfoot is set against a pair of mirrored spirals. Together, these two modes―representational and abstract―demonstrate the artist’s belief that close observation of nature reveals “what stands behind the flowers”: ineffable aspects of the human character.
Published in conjunction with the first public exhibition of this rare portfolio, Hilma af Klint: What Stands Behind the Flowers presents the drawings alongside contextualizing artworks and translations of the artist’s previously unpublished writings. An overview essay by curator Jodi Hauptman explores af Klint’s portfolio and the circumstances of its creation; texts by Ewa Lajer-Burcharth, Laura Neufeld and Lena Struwe unpack the imagery, materiality and botanical knowledge behind these works.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Bosco Verticale, this book traces the history of a building that has become a symbol of Milan.

From the outset, the concept developed by Stefano Boeri for a residential building in 2004 proved to be forward-looking as it anticipated the new frontiers of urban living. Ten years after its inauguration, the Bosco Verticale (Vertical Forest) has kept all its promises and launched a new way of imagining contemporary cities.

This book celebrates an architectural work that has become the symbol of a renewed collective sensibility toward care for the environment and the plant world. Edited by Stefano Boeri Architetti, it traces its entire history. “The Bosco Verticale is one of the few ‘living’ buildings whose life is still followed ten years later.” This was the inspiration behind the editorial structure of the volume, which is formed of three sections that evoke the growth of a tree: roots, trunk, and branches and leaves.

The various texts contributed by international authors and scholars are accompanied by drawings, sketches, and photographs of the construction site and the building that changes over the course of the seasons and years. The material comes from the archives of Studio Boeri Architetti and photo shoots that document the evolution of the project over the years. It features a photographic portfolio by Iwan Baan made specifically for the book, which also includes photos of the area from above and photos of the apartments that frame the city, filtered by the leaves of trees and plants.

The long-awaited debut book on Craig Bergmann, pre-eminent designer of traditional gardens along the North Shore of Chicago.

For more than four decades, Craig Bergmann has been recognized for intertwining design, horticulture, and architecture, establishing a true dialogue between the garden and the architectural site. Revered as a plantsman, Bergmann layers his designs with vibrant blooms and textured foliage. The Art of Fine Gardening features twenty gardens that span his career and are located in the North Shore of Chicago. A special chapter is dedicated to the Gardens at 900, the historic estate designed by architect David Adler, that he developed and reimagined as a series of lush private garden rooms with hedges, towering topiary, perennial borders, and interspersed with classical figures and ornament. Featuring stunning garden images by noted photographer Scott Shigley and texts written by Bergmann, the book describes all the gardens in his own voice – a voice of true experience – offering anecdotes and practical tips to gardeners.

In dialogue with other architects and committees – among others, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, BIG Bjarke Ingels Group, Stefano Boeri Architetti, Credite Agricole, Fondazione Riccardo Catella – the book underlines the importance of a shared quality of the daily urban landscape as a key quality of our contemporary cities.

The Right to Nature is a new chapter of reflection and work of the AG&P greenscape, centered on the current and renewed relationship between man and nature. Through out seven main topics – Sociality/Collectivity, Infrastructure, Inhabit, Work/Welfare, Regeneration, Care, Heritage – the book explores contemporary urban landscape issues at the different scales of the project, in the light of the relationship between human beings and nature.

Ten years after its well-received publication, Weather in the City. How Design Shapes the Urban Climate is more relevant than ever. Prolonged heat waves are a source of many heat stress related problems, especially in our cities, which tend to exacerbate already high temperatures. At the same time, there is a growing awareness on the part of city dwellers and local councils of the problems caused by certain wind phenomena in the city.

This revised edition draws on current examples in demonstrating how the comfort of the urban environment can be enhanced using modern techniques and new methods. How we experience the urban climate depends on various physical and psychological factors. Based on these factors, Sanda Lenzholzer shows how basic climatic processes work in an urban environment, and how they can be influenced by spatial planning and urban design. The book is richly illustrated with photographs, outline drawings and practice-based examples. It is both a reference work and a source of inspiration for all those engaged in creating a liveable city, be they clients, policymakers, professionals or students involved in urban design, landscape architecture and planning.

Paul Bangay (b. 1963, Australia) is a landscape designer who relishes the challenge of working at scale. He creates gardens that feel as though they’ve been there forever.

They emerge from the countryside, with borrowed landscapes and dramatic views as key elements. Within each design, Paul makes spaces that bring different experiences of the garden. Large sweeping lawns, magnificent soaring trees and numerous, deep garden beds. An allée of trees directs the eye to mountains in the distance. Outdoor dining areas offer intimate vantage points within the broader scale.

From grand gardens in France to a forest grown from seedlings, join Paul on this tour de force of projects complete with lakes, mountains and walled gardens. Paul shares the design process, as well as garden plans and extensive planting lists, while Simon Griffiths’ photography captures the sublime form and light of these generous landscapes.

A splendid journey through the complexity of Sri Lankan gardens, past and present.

The rich history of Sri Lankan gardens extends from the early boulder-and-terrace gardens of Buddhist monasteries to the designed landscapes of the 17th to 19th centuries as well as many significant contemporary examples. Gardens of Sri Lanka leads the reader from one surprise to the next. First, there is the world of Sri Lanka’s great royal estates: spatial generosity reflecting a local aristocratic civilization. Another essential tradition presented is that of Sri Lanka’s monastic gardens. The sheer number of Buddhist monasteries scattered all over the island is remarkable. Most of these sites contain gardens rather than buildings. Then there are colonial gardens; visually magical but representing a dark history, these gardens are often forced amalgams between a self-celebrating culture from outside Sri Lanka and the local topography and vegetation within it. Last but not least are contemporary gardens that have, physically and immediately for those lucky enough to walk through them, an extraordinary force and something to teach the world.
The meticulous execution of Gardens of Sri Lanka and the quality of the photographic and textual documentation allows readers unfamiliar with Sri Lanka’s topography to discover, page after page, the existence of a unique and complex world of gardens that they never knew existed.

This volume is the official authorized biography of artist, filmmaker and gay rights activist Derek Jarman (1942–94). First published in 2011, this classic biography returns in a new edition featuring contributions by bestselling authors Olivia Laing and Jon Savage looking at Jarman’s impact and legacy over the past five decades. The book was authored by Jarman’s longtime literary agent, Tony Peake, who was given unprecedented access to Jarman’s archives.
Jarman’s story stretches from the bleakness of postwar Britain and his RAF childhood to studenthood at the Slade and work as a designer for such figures as John Gielgud and Ken Russell. It is the story of a filmmaker, a gay activist, a painter and a gardener, and a vivid bohemian existence in a London long gone. Jarman created a singular garden in the shingle surrounding his simple fisherman’s cottage at Dungeness in Kent, which has become a site of memorial, celebration and pilgrimage. He became known as an impassioned and provocative spokesperson not only for gay men, but for anyone oppressed by bigotry. Derek Jarman died of AIDS-related causes in February 1994; Peake describes the inimitable courage and grace he possessed in the face of painful death, and the legacies he left behind.

Visionary landscape architecture and garden design at mid-century in North America is captured by the greats of the era, including Julius Shulman and Ezra Stoller in many previously unpublished photographs. This publication becomes now a special time document. How much would still exist after the recent California fires?

The treasures of mid-century American architecture have long been celebrated. Less appreciated has been the landscape design that provides the framing for these masterworks. But more than frame, landscape architecture is an art worthy of the spotlight, particularly at mid-century, when the notion that “gardens are outdoor spaces for people to live in” was championed and brought to the fore; now gardens and landscapes are not just external attributes to the house but a continuation of it and its living spaces in a relationship of symbiosis, with its pools and terraces, its winding lawns, and its partly enclosed room-like spaces flanked by brick or stone or plantings in a range of colors and forms.

Approximately seventy-five mostly residential projects are thoroughly documented and recounted. Landscape architects whose work is featured include Thomas Church, Lawrence Halprin, and Garrett Eckbo, among others. Highlights include the dramatic surrounds of Richard Neutra’s Perkins House in its Pasadena hillside setting and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Marin County Civic Center, where environment and building comingle in an extraordinary modernist vision of the future made real.

The book discusses the ways in which the project can critically contribute to an affirmative biopolitical action of substantial emancipation; it considers space an essential agent, and not only a collective capital, or a support, for adapting our lives to the recent profoundly changed conditions.

In all the new research on the future of urban space, the renewed interest in life, tragically affected by health, ecological and socio-political crises, raises a crucial theoretical and projective question: what role can space play in maintaining and promoting life in the broader sense of bíos? This book is based on the conviction that there is an urgent need to revisit the Foucauldian notion of biopolitics – free, however, from the privilege given to the goal of control – to rethink the project of the city and territory in transition in an affirmative and emancipatory way.

The ‘biopolitical garden’ designates both the mental place and the set of concrete spaces in which the critical thinking developed in this book takes place. Profound and original, it starts from a consideration of the modern and contemporary project as one committed to the maintenance and emancipation of a population. Re-reading a series of paradigmatic projects from the twentieth century, Paola Viganò acknowledges the long-term validity of the three fundamental concepts of functional space, natural space, and social space. She then proposes a theoretical renewal that considers the value of space as an agent subject endowed with its own vitality. Finally, the projects developed by the author in recent years provide a laboratory for ‘situating’ her thinking within a perspective of spatial, social, and environmental justice.

Paola Viganò is an architect and urbanist, is Full Professor in Urban Theory and Urban Design at the EPFL (CH) where she directs the Habitat Research Center and the Lab-U and at IUAV Venice (IT).

How forest urbanism can address the contemporary socio-ecological crisis.

A radical redefinition of how humanity occupies the earth — through forests, agriculture, and settlement — and rearticulates environmental stewardship by intertwining ecologies and urbanisms, this publication brings together essays by scholars in forestry, urbanism and other disciplines, designers, practitioners and policy makers. It explores the multifaceted notion of forest urbanisms, including a conceptual framing essay; contributions from the sciences such as bioscience engineering, architecture, urbanism and public policy; contemporary forest urbanism projects and explorative essays that make tangible an agenda for the 21st century. With descriptions of both built and non-built projects from around the globe, the essays show how such projects substantiate a radical shift in humankind’s occupation of the world, where ecologies and urbanisms converge and agriculture, forests, and settlements are integrated.

Forest Urbanisms extends growing research on a new nature–culture relationship, the necessity for trees in cities, and a rebalancing of ecology and urbanism.

Piet Blanckaert brings more than forty years of experience and a love of gardens to his work. Inspired by the great English landscape architects, his repertoire ranges from the walled gardens of his hometown of Bruges to magically structured landscape ensembles. With an introductory essay on his working methods, this book presents Blanckaert’s gardens from the Baltic to the Mediterranean, from the earliest to the most recent, captured in fantastic photographs by Jean-Pierre Gabriel in every season.

While sculpture remained central to his artistic practice, Isamu Noguchi’s (1904-1988) interests and production spanned an exceptionally broad terrain that included furniture and lamps, stage sets for dance, plazas, courtyards–and gardens. Noguchi made no distinction between design, craft, and the so-called fine arts: in his view all of these could all be considered art should their aesthetic qualities sufficiently transcend those generated by the simple address of need.

Although his gardens include several of the twentieth century’s most iconic landscape designs and have received almost universal praise, Noguchi nonetheless occupies a place removed from the normal practice of landscape architecture. As an artist he relied more on intuition–bolstered by focused study where required–than on objective analysis, and he shaped his landscapes as sculpture, with space as their primary vehicle. To Noguchi landscape design was a spatial and formal art, and from his earliest environmental projects to the works of his later maturity, he succeeded in conceiving and constructing a series of remarkable places.

In this comprehensive and richly illustrated study of Noguchi’s gardens, noted landscape historian Marc Treib describes and critiques projects that date from his early unrealized projects for playgrounds and monuments to a large park in Sapporo, Japan, whose construction was completed only posthumously. The story begins with the discussion of Noguchi sculpture that relate in some way to actual landscapes, then moves to the dance set designs for Martha Graham, finally entering the realm of actual landscapes with his gardens for the Reader’s Digest offices in Tokyo and UNESCO House in Paris. Many more projects followed in the United States, Japan, and Israel.

Varying in their content and structure, several chapters collectively treat subjects such as landform, water, and the courtyard, while others focus on the major gardens monographically. Accompanied by stunning images from the archives of Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum archives and the author’s own photographs, the story of Noguchi’s Gardens: Landscape as Sculpture will reward those interested in landscape architecture, art history, garden design, and art more broadly.

There has never been a better time to plant trees. As well as playing a vital role in the health of the natural world and of us humans, these essential life-giving plants also deliver a vast array of hidden benefits such as cooling shade, rainfall interception and carbon capture – but only if we plant the right tree in the right place.

International tree expert Henrik Sjöman along with garden designer and passionate advocate for the environment Arit Anderson have created this visionary resource suitable for the world’s temperate regions. It opens with a clear explanation of ecosystem services and how trees deliver them. Some trees excel at particular roles such as providing food for pollinators at times when it is scarce or filtering air pollution. Others have adapted in ways that allow them to cope with extreme conditions such as drought, low-nutrient soil and high winds.

At the heart of the book is a unique A-Z Tree Directory representing more than 550 trees chosen for their ecosystem benefits, resilience and a host of other criteria that will ensure their continuing contribution to our future gardens and landscapes. A further quick-reference Tree Selection Table provides key attributes for each species at a glance.

This important new tree selection guide marks a step change in approach that will lead to more trees reaching their full potential and a richer environment for future generations.

Ten gardens made in Italy by the most respected Italian garden architect: this is a book for lovers of greenery and the Italian landscape.

The ten gardens brought together in this book — located in different regions of Italy, from the wetlands of Piedmont to the gentle hills of Tuscany, from the lush Riviera to the sunny coasts of the South — reflect the variety of the Italian territory and its extraordinary biodiversity.

In his gardens, Paolo Pejrone tackles the task of designing greenery with great humility, placing himself at the service of nature and never vice versa. He respects the genius loci, plans seasonal blooms, prioritizes native plants, and studies exposure to sun and shade to minimize watering needs and make the most of the land’s resources. In full harmony with the rhythm of nature, Pejrone’s gardens are a manifesto of sobriety and sustainability.

The book offers the opportunity to see places not open to the public, including private gardens, some of which are new and previously unseen.

The partnership between Pejrone and the photographer Dario Fusaro started many years ago but still continues today. In addition to documenting the transformations of the ever-changing gardens over time, Fusaro photographs every new intervention by Pejrone. In this book he presents the most recent works by Pejrone, some of them completely new, with sweeping views and unexpected glimpses, taken from above with a drone or as macro photographs of flowers and plants.

Concealed, protected and hidden: these are the gardens of Venice, protagonists of the illustrated volume published by Marsilio Arte and edited by Toto Bergamo Rossi, director of the Venetian Heritage association with Marco Bay, landscape architect. The texts signed by the two authors of the book, accompanied by the evocative shots of Marco Valmarana, guide the reader to the discovery of these green gems, privileged places where nature, art and history are intertwined.

The volume is a real journey through the gardens of Venice, from the most sumptuous kept in the noble palaces overlooking the Grand Canal to the more vernacular ones of the islands of the lagoon, collected and presented systematically through indexing by districts. The spring flowering, the summer opulence, the colors of autumn, the fog and the winter frost are captured in a new way in a series of photos full of details and emotions, which reveal the secret Venetian green through the seasons.

Discovers the importance of gardening in the work of Swiss-American photographer Marina Schinz.

Gardens and flowers have been a core subject of Marina Schinz’s career. This found expression in her previous books Visions of Paradise, The Gardens of Russell Page, and A Tuscan Paradise. Visiting and photographing countless gardens around the world made her engage in gardening herself and culminated in major garden design projects for her houses, first in the Hudson Valley and later near Piacenza in Italy.

In Green Thoughts and Memories, Schinz looks back at her gardening adventures, interweaving horticultural observations with memoirs of her childhood in Zurich. Entertaining and engaging at the same time, full of practical considerations, and rendered with humor and philosophy, the book offers an unconventional appreciation of garden art. It conveys basic knowledge to put budding gardeners and rank beginners on the road to planting a mere tree or starting an entire garden. In twelve chapters, it explores all the elements of gardening, such as weather, soil, labor, planning, flowers, shrubs, etc.
Richly illustrated in full color throughout with Schinz’s photographs of famous and unknown gardens around the world, this beautiful volume will appeal to anyone with a love of plants and gardens or with a desire to create a personal paradise.

Brutalist architecture is commonly associated with a cold, austere aesthetic. But architects have long found ways of incorporating greenery into their more brutal designs, creating a striking contrast between the hard and the soft, the cold and the complex, the sharp edges of concrete and shapes of living plants. And even when not designed to do so, nature often has its own way of reclaiming the built environment. From green roofs to living walls, from the pocket gardens of Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation to the lush courtyards and conservatory of London’s Barbican Centre, Olivia Broome has curated a visual celebration of brutalist plants.

In this book, Hollander explores the idea of home as the natural surroundings that people live in: a place of living, changing beauty, refuge, and above all, joy, where family and friends gather to create a lifetime of memories.

The book presents homes in the countryside, along the coast, and in town—and features a rich diversity of projects, from country estates to rooftop gardens. Throughout, Hollander discusses essential elements in his firm’s work: the importance of the procession of entry to a house, as well as its context in the landscape; the positioning of plant life and trees; the way people move into and through a property; and the way a garden looks and changes through the seasons. Within each project there are a striking variety of components—outdoor rooms for living and lounging, including oceanside hearths, infinity pools, and verdant dining spaces, as well as pollinator gardens, naturalistic meadows, and tranquil allées. Site maps illuminate each site, and the images capture moments large and small, from views of winding pathways to a vine-covered arbor and a rabbit enjoying flowers at dawn.

The garden embodies a condensed version of nature, just as, in Japanese philosophy, the entire world is thought to be reflected in a single dewdrop. This notion may be the inspiration for the Swiss imitation of Japanese gardens in the 20th century, the impetus for the incorporation of Japanese design elements more generally, and the conversion principle from alpine landscapes to Japanese stone gardens. Taking ten Swiss landscape architecture studios as examples, the author illustrates how they drew inspiration from miniaturized gardens (bonsai), borrowed scenery (shakkei), succumbed to the allure of the imperfect (wabi-sabi), and captured the spirit of Zen Buddhism. This book reveals parallels to the assimilation of Chinese influences in Japan and situates the phenomenon within the general reception of Japan in the West.

Tulips are one of the world’s most popular flowers, with over 2,500 varieties produced in the Netherlands each year. This spectacular book showcases a unique collection of rare and covetable tulips at Blacklands, the beautiful English country garden of tulip expert Polly Nicholson.
Combining the flower’s rich cultural history with growing advice, Nicholson provides a comprehensive introduction to cultivating species, historic Dutch and English Florists’ tulips, and annual garden tulips. Featuring all types of tulip – from wild, species tulips to old Dutch cultivars, as well as English Florists’, and the ever popular annual garden tulips – she also offers modern context and sensible and practical advice for gardeners, based on her personal horticultural experience.
Bringing to life varieties that date back to the 16th century, Nicholson demonstrates how these treasured bulbs and more modern varieties of these enchanting spring flowers can be grown today – whether in herbaceous borders, naturalized in grass, in containers, gravel, meadow settings, or in the garden for cutting.
The Tulip Garden is an essential reference for tulip lovers, florists, and gardeners, but also, with newly commissioned photography by Andrew Montgomery, an inspirational resource, tapping into the zeitgeist for sustainable flowers and organic gardening, focusing on one of the world’s most popular flowers.

Throughout Europe, there are demands for car-free, climate-compatible, diversely usable, and aesthetically attractive places where people can gather. Urban squares play a key role in this respect. This publication highlights 32 squares located in 16 European countries, all of which have been designed or redesigned in last 20 years. Among these are Trafalgar Square, London, Benthemplein, Rotterdam, Stephansplatz, Vienna, and Nørre Voldgade, Copenhagen. The book introduces the current debate and methods for organising and designing such places, then goes on to present detailed analyses of the selected examples.

How can architecture make a contribution to achieving a paradigm shift? Can architecture not only be designed to be removable and recyclable, but to be additionally green as well? Can architecture also be an ecological system? What is blue-green architecture?
Architects face the demand to fully exploit unused potential and find ways to use plants as tools for design. This is both the case in the development of spaces as well as urban environments, but particularly on buildings themselves.

“Green Facades” provides architects with the necessary specialist knowledge to competently deal with the living architecture on the building envelope.

Architecturally speaking, the term ‘greenhouse’ refers to buildings designed to optimally protect, cultivate and propagate plants under conditions that artificially reproduce their environments of origin. Employed successfully over centuries, these transparent microcosms have allowed some nations to improve their scientific knowledge, provide botanical education and develop horticultural innovations. Parallel to the benefits they brought with them, greenhouses have also had – and still have – harmful consequences on the way we relate to others, both humans and other-than-humans, and the environments we co-inhabit with them.

Shifting away from the celebration of greenhouses as technical mastery and exceptional architectural feats, Greenhouse Stories is an invitation to critically look at greenhouses as controversial (agri)cultural production tools. Re-examining them from a social, historical, environmental and creative perspective, the essays and interviews featured in this book highlight stories of vegetal displacement, colonial appropriation and pollution. Yet they also help us to understand that greenhouses can be fertile spaces for women’s empowerment and the nurturing of socially-engaged and eco-conscious projects.

At a time of great anthropocentric pressure on the planet, we believe that questioning the greenhouse as a symbol and a tool can help us re-establish more humble and meaningful connections with the Earth and its living communities.

In the book ‘Woods go urban’ fourteen experienced landscape architects and urban planners share – for the first time – their knowledge and insights on the creation and management of the landscape laboratories in Scandinavia.

Trees are social beings, just like us humans. Most trees live together in forests, woodlands, or simply woods. We love the woods. We often say to one another, let’s go to the woods. But what if it was the other way around? If the woods came to us, into our cities? This reflection might seem obscure. At a second glance however, it just might be the most logical and right thing to do.

The urban forest of the future is growing in Sweden. More than thirty years ago, three landscape laboratories were created here to provide space for experiments with alternative forest development. An approach in which hands-on design is combined with creative management, interactive education and with research and resident participation. An innovative approach. In the urban forest of the future, design and maintenance flow together seamlessly.

In the richly illustrated and academically founded book Woods go urban you can read everything there is to know about the design and development of these unique landscape labs. The book presents the ins and outs of the structural elements of the forest and will provide you with solid knowledge about it the meaning of creative management.

A newly expanded edition of Sternfeld’s popular portrayal of the High Line’s early days.

With nine additional photos, a larger format and an expanded, up-to-date timeline, this is the new and revised edition of Joel Sternfeld’s Walking the High Line, which documents the overgrown elevated freight rail line above New York’s West Side before it was transformed into the cherished High Line public park in 2009.

In the dark days following the September 11 attacks in New York in 2001, Joel Sternfeld came to Gerhard Steidl with the hope of quickly making a book. For the previous two years Sternfeld had been photographing the abandoned railroad and working with a group, the Friends of the High Line, that wanted to save it and turn it into a park. Powerful real estate and political interests seeking to tear it down and commercially develop the land beneath it were using the chaos of the period to rush forward their plans. Steidl agreed―six weeks later there were finished books in New York. It was a small volume but it played a crucial role in allowing New Yorkers to see for the first time the beauty of a secret railroad in all the seasons.

Like the photographs made by William Henry Jackson in the 1870s of Yellowstone that led Congress to establish a national park, the pictures proved pivotal in the making of the High Line’s reputation.

Lectures on landscaping, history and ecology from the peerless landscape architect who revolutionized the garden aesthetic

The great landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx (1909–94) revolutionized tropical garden aesthetics for the 20th century, and today his designs for parks and gardens are celebrated across the world. Marx’s innovations can be summarized, as author Rossana Vaccarino observes, “in four general design concepts—the use of native tropical vegetation as a structural element of design, the rupture of symmetrical patterns in the conception of open spaces, the colorful treatment of pavements and the use of free forms in water features.”
Intangible Heritage presents both Marx’s work and teachings, compiling nine of his most seminal lectures written between 1962 and 1983. Illustrated with images of his mosaics and detailed maps, the volume groups Marx’s lectures into three thematic sections: in the first, he explores how botanical expeditions, such as his trip to the Amazonas in 1983, informed his thinking about urban landscapes; in the second, Marx traces facets of landscape architecture to their ancestral origins and discusses the role of subjectivity in the profession; in the third, he delves into society’s responsibility to protect the environment. The publication also features texts from Marx’s collaborators and admirers, including an essay by José Tabacow, partner of Marx in his last projects, and conversations with art critic Jacques Leenhardt.

Using materials such as earth, wind, water, fire, wood, salt, rocks, mirrors and explosives, American artists of the 1960s began to move beyond the white cube gallery space to work directly in the land. With ties to Minimal and Conceptual art, these artists placed less emphasis on the discrete object and turned their attention to the experience of the artwork―however fleeting or permanent that might be―foregrounding natural materials and the site itself to create large-scale works located outside of typical urban art-world circuits.
Histories of Land art have long been dominated by men, but Groundswell: Women of Land Art shifts that focus to shed new light on the vast number of earthworks by women artists. While their careers ran parallel to those of their better-known male counterparts, they have received less recognition and representation in museum presentations―until now.
This book includes five scholarly essays, as well as a detailed chronology, exhibition checklist and illustrated biographies of exhibition artists. Groundswell is a resource for readers interested in understanding the historical Land art movement and our own relationship to the earth.

A richly illustrated survey celebrating humankind’s enduring relationship with the garden, explored throughout art, science, history, and culture

Garden takes readers on a journey across continents and cultures to discover the endless ways artists and image-makers have found inspiration in gardens and horticulture throughout history. With more than 300 entries, this comprehensive and stunning visual survey showcases the diversity of the garden from all over the world – from the garden of Eden and the grandeur of the English landscape garden to Japanese Zen gardens and the humble vegetable plot.

Spanning a wide range of styles and media – art, illustrations, and sculptures to photography, film stills, and textiles – Garden follows a visually arresting sequence, with works, regardless of period, thoughtfully paired, and features large-scale images, accessible texts, and reference information, including a glossary, illustrated timeline, and biographies.
Offering a comprehensive introduction to the subject, Garden features work by a diverse range of both lesser-known and iconic artists, including Pierre Bonnard, Roberto Burle Marx, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Gertrude Jekyll, Claude Monet, Marianne North, Crispijn de Passe, William Robinson, Alma Thomas, and Howard Sooley, among others, including a variety of surprising examples that will appeal to specialists as well as the general reader.
Aimed at a wide audience, this book has diverse appeal – from artists, designers, and art historians to garden enthusiasts, horticulturists, and everyone interested in the natural world around them.

Texts by Richard Aitken, Giovanni Aloi, Sara Bader, Matthew Biggs, Tim Cooke, Brent Elliott, Diane Fortenberry, Tom Furness, Noel Kingsbury, Colleen Morris, Toby Musgrave, Kristine Paulus, Gill Saunders, James Smith, David Trigg, Alice Vincent, and Martin Walters.

– Jelle Grintjes

From 1923 until 1980, Mien Ruys created over 3,000 gardens and landscapes. While most of these are in her native Netherlands, the influence of her designs and approaches spread far wider: many of us will have a little bit of Mien in our gardens, be it a railway sleeper, a diagonal line, a Phlomis russeliana or a water ball. Her work was extraordinary in combining two exceptional elements. Firstly, Mien was one of the leading proponents of modernist design: having trained and collaborated with architects such as Ben Merkelbach, Charles Karsten, Aldo van Eyck, Jan Piet Kloos, Hein Salomonson and Gerrit Rietveld, she introduced clean lines, geometric shapes and innovative materials into garden and landscape design. One of the few women members of CIAM, she was also one of the first to call for architects and landscape architects to collaborate fully from initial design onwards. She did so regularly, often on much needed social housing schemes, but also on schools, hospitals and nursing homes. All her projects shared a desire to offer users a better quality of life. One of her most well-known collaborations was with Gerrit Rietveld in Bergeijk on the Ploeg factory and Park, which has since been listed as a historic monument. Uniquely, she combined this modernist design approach with an extensive knowledge of plants and planting, which she learnt from a very early age in her father’s Royal Moerheim Nursery in Dedemsvaart. Her father had close links with international gardeners, such as Gertrude Jekyll, who greatly influenced Mien as she developed her own loose, natural style of planting. Her book on perennials, published in 1950, was internationally influential and, in seeking deeper understanding about plants and planting, Mien created more than 20 experimental gardens at Dedemsvaart, many of which are now also historic monuments. The book includes a foreword which sets Mien’s work within the wider context, as well as interviews with gardening experts and landscape architects who knew Mien or were deeply influenced by her work, which offer rich insight into Mien’s character and the timeless lessons which can still be learnt from her work.

What Makes a Garden builds upon the work of The Thoughtful Garden, giving a broader idea of how she thinks about garden design. In particular it emphasizes her multi-disciplinary approach, which embraces architecture, conservation and art, coupled with a strong holistic thread.
This fascinating and insightful book looks at how a garden should please all five senses; how it is an alchemical mix of the inanimate and the living; and also how it has to accommodate both the effects of time and the influences of culture.
This is not intended as a book of rules but rather a way of thinking about garden design and making sure it responds to the particularities of place, the culture and the demands of the client. Drawing on her work and experience over the last 20 years or so, the book gets to the heart of what people want and need from a garden and what makes it different from a natural landscape.
Reflecting Jinny‘s highly individual approach to garden design, the book is filled with warmth and character alongside her expert knowledge. With a broad appeal, this beautiful book is for all garden lovers: thoughtful yet practical and informative, it marries artistry with functionality.

Never before had the garden to fulfil so many demands as it does today. It is a refuge from digitalised life and acts as a bridge to nature. As a man-made place where plants grow, it is cultivated and untamable at the same time. While for centuries the gardener’s ambition was to control and subjugate nature, today it serves more as a place for retreat, a possible surrogate for wilderness, a habitat for animals or it fulfils the dream of self-sufficiency.
In this book, landscape architects, sociologists, architects, artists, philosophers and historians illuminate different aspects of the garden in the Anthropocene in six chapters: the garden as a place of community, garden as art, garden as a place of enchantment and rapture, opening up questions of what garden as a model could stand for.

Beginning in 1987, with Álvaro Siza in the Malagueira plan, Gomes da Silva’s career has decisively marked Portuguese contemporary architecture. From Serralves Museum Garden to Madeira’s Seafront Promenade and Lisbon’s riverfront, his particular conception of new grounds proposes a formality without formalisms and a naturalness without naturalisms.

A splendid book, we think!

Introduction by lauded designer Chisao Shigemori, grandson of legendary garden master Mirei Shigemori

A Japanese garden represents the essence of Japanese culture, embodying the country’s spirit and philosophy. It has a distinctive style, quality of materials and emphasis on details. Modern Japanese Gardens captures this spirit through the work of 20 contemporary Japanese garden design masters.
The gardens featured in Modern Japanese Gardens are drawn from a variety of locations in Japan, placed in different settings, from private houses and temples to cafés, restaurants and stores. Some are of traditional appearance; others have a distinctly modern aesthetic. In common, all the gardens have been influenced by Japanese culture and society, created by masters who are internationally recognized and lauded for their skills.
Modern Japanese Gardens includes insightful text on each garden, revealing the concept behind the design and the use of plants, alongside photography exploring both the detail and the overall aesthetic that shape the design.

An engrossing look at the rich and turbulent history of coloring cloth.

Over the centuries our manipulation of the natural world has resulted in an explosion of synthetic dye production and application globally. To gain insight into the history of how folk practices have been lost and technical processes found, anthropologist and textile artist Lauren MacDonald explores a practice that is both ancient and wholly modern: coloring cloth. The pursuit of color has long spurred economic and social contest, and through this deeply researched volume we explore the stories that the materials used to dye cloth tell us about our complex relationship to nature, our troubling ideas about progress and our understanding of power and labor.
In Pursuit of Color brings together historic techniques, archive photography, specimens and present-day events to tell the histories of some of the world’s most important dyestuffs. A 32-page supplement accompanies the volume, detailing practical applications and the chemistry behind dyeing processes. The book comes in three different covers (red, yellow and blue) which are shipped randomly as a further happy surprise.

There is a growing interest in fungi and mycelium as a material, the ever-branching connecting threads of the fungal world. The entanglements and how this rhizomatic network functions is not just a fascinating ecological system and material, but carries a profound usefulness as a metaphor for our potential new systems, ways of thinking and behaviors.

Let’s Become Fungal! takes its inspiration from the world of art and mycology and shares innovative practices from Latin America and the Caribbean that are rooted in multispecies collaboration, symbiosis, alliances, non-monetary resource exchange, decentralization, bottom-up methods and mutual dependency—all in line with the behavior of the mycelium.

Every chapter is phrased as a question. They do not lead to answers, but to twelve teachings addressing for instance collaboration, decoloniality, non-linearity, toxicity, mobilization, biomimicry, death, and being non-binary. Simultaneously it ventures deeper into the world of fungi. The teachings from the fungus may inspire artists, collectives, organizations, educators, policy-makers, designers, scientists, anthropologists, change-makers, curators, urbanists, activists, gardeners, community-leaders, farmers, and many others, to become more fungal in their ways of working and being.
