EM2N: Both And

Pier Vittorio Aureli, André Bideau, Roger Diener, Gerhard Mack and Stanislaus von Moos

first monograph devoted to the Zurich architecture firm EM2N.
EM2N propose a complex and multi-layered architecture that takes unashamed inspiration from reality and is consistently located in the here and now. With their unconventional and innovative projects, Mathias Müller, Daniel Niggli and their team are internationally recognized as among Switzerland’s most successful architecture firms. The undogmatic directness of the EM2N approach has often caused their work to be described as “pragmatic”. EM2N tackle seemingly impossible situations head on, relishing difficult conditions as an opportunity to create unique architecture. Although they draw on the tradition of the classic “Swiss box”, EM2N’s powerful structures are designed not as solipsistic icons but rather as “relational objects” that add value to the public space and therefore become part of the cityscape. Conversely, EM2N interpret houses as small towns, developing a concept of “inner urbanism”. From this conception of urban design and a regular engagement with existing stock grows an interest in architectural paradigms, continuity, and an endeavour to produce the “difficult whole”.
