Ariane Van der Veken
Director of the Academy of Fine Arts of the city of Geel, °1958 Geel www. kunst.academiegeel.be. kunst.academiegeel.be Ariane is an enthusiastic and dynamic woman with a lively mind. As director of an academy of visual art, she buys mainly books that will be of interest to the institute: books about painting, sculpting, ceramics, photography and architecture as a source of inspiration for both her teachers and students. She is also drawn to books about colours and forms in the culture of Africa, South America and India. An art historian by training, she loves art books in a private capacity too. That day she chose the book about the paintings of Michaël Borremans because both lecturers and students greatly appreciate his work, not only because of the subject matter, but also because Borremans is a 'classic' painter, a true master of his métier. Ariane also chose books about Belgian architect Bruno Erpicum (totally unknown in Belgium until the publication of this book!), 'The Shape of Things to Come' about new sculpture, the large-format monograph about Henry Darger and publications about the painters Marc Rothko and Adrian Ghenie.
