Introduced by Monotype in the late 1920s to contend against the craze for Futura, Gill Sans crafted by British type designer Eric Gill (1882-1940) is the refined version of Edward Johnston’s signage alphabet for London Underground, which he worked on as Johnston’s apprentice.
